SAN DIEGO — A body found floating in the water near the shore of Sunset Cliffs Thursday is that of a 75-year-old missing man, police said.

Police called lifeguards at about 12:30 p.m. to report a person in the water off the 1000 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to San Diego Lifeguard Marine Safety Lt. Rich Stropky. Lifeguard crews brought the body ashore and used a crane to lift it up to the road in a basket, Stropky said. The man was elderly but had not been positively identified, Stropky said.

People living in the area were sad to learn of the man’s death.

“I think every year there’s deaths here on the cliffs,” said Eric Johnson, a lifelong resident.

“Usually it’s an accident, people falling off, but I understand it was an elderly gentleman. I don’t know if he was confused or something happened, but it’s pretty sad,” said Johnson.

Police had been searching in the area since about 8:30 a.m. for the man, who had been reported missing by his wife, SDPD public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said. The woman told police that her husband had left their home around 5:40 a.m. and had not returned by 8:30 a.m., Hernandez told the San Diego Union-Tribune. The couple lived a few blocks from where the body was found, the newspaper reported.
