SAN DIEGO — Police Thursday were trying to determine how the body of a man ended up stuck in the mud in the San Diego River channel.

The body was reported about 30 feet out in the channel north of Interstate 8 between the West Mission Bay Drive and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard bridges. Three lifeguards waded out to the body and pulled it into an inflatable raft.  They brought it back to shore just before 9 a.m.

The cause of death and the man’s identity were to be determinated by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police speculated that the man may have waded out in the channel and become stuck in the mud.
