ENCINITAS, Calif. — The body of a unidentified surfer was discovered under a floating surfboard south of Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas Wednesday afternoon.

The body, which Encinitas lifeguards said was that of an adult male, was found at around 2 p.m. The man was still attached to his board with a surf leash.

“We don’t know the circumstances; there was nobody that reported this to the lifeguards. It was spotted from a distance,” Encinitas Lifeguards Capt. Larry Giles said.

According to Giles, lifeguards spotted the board in the water from their main tower and went to check it out. They said it looked like the body had been in the water for at least a few hours.

The Medical Examiner’s Office was working to identify the surfer and determine his cause of death.
