OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A 37-year-old construction worker was found dead under suspicious circumstances Thursday at his job site in Oceanside, according to police.

Oceanside police dispatch received a 911 call at about 5 a.m. to respond to a medical aid call in the 200 block of Windward Way, where a house was under construction, according to Lt. Aaron Doyle.

"When first responders arrived on scene, they discovered a male victim who had sustained obvious signs of traumatic injury," Doyle said. "The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene."

The exact causes of the injuries were unknown, pending an autopsy by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office, according to Doyle.

"Based on the circumstances of this case it is being investigated as a homicide," Doyle said.

The victim was described as a 37-year-old white man who was not an Oceanside resident. His identity will be released once his family is notified. It was not believed to be gang-related, according to Doyle.

Rick Wood, who works on the construction site and was initially taken into custody for eight hours of questioning, said he can't believe his friend was killed.

"They got film. They got a camera watching that place so whoever did it is gonna get realized here real quick," Wood said.

No suspects were in custody as of Thursday night.
