SAN DIEGO – California Highway Patrol officers have arrested a 42-year-old Illinois man after a pursuit with a big rig.
The chase started in Corona, ending in San Diego’s Rancho Bernardo neighborhood Friday evening around 9 p.m.
It started when a driver on the I-15 freeway called and said someone in a tractor trailer appeared to be under the influence. Initially police in Corona attempted to pull over the semi trailer. The driver continued driving. The driver was reportedly driving recklessly, suspected of driving under the influence.
CHP took over the pursuit as it continued southbound on Interstate 15. Officers deployed “spike-strips” in attempts to slow the truck, which punctured the truck’s front left tire, slowing the driver down from 40 mph to 5 mph.
Eventually the driver exited Pomerado Rd and pulled over. He still didn’t get out of the truck, so CHP shot bean bags at his window, eventually breaking one.
The man came out and appeared to have minor cuts from the glass. CHP said he would be taken to the hospital and later booked.
The driver was arrested and charged with reckless evading, DUI and resisting arrest.
