SAN DIEGO — A man was fatally shot in the East Village area Saturday evening, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 p.m. outside the Alpha Project homeless shelter at 17th Street and Imperial Avenue, authorities said.

Alpha Project’s CEO told FOX 5 the victim was a security guard who worked for the shelter.

The shelter was placed on lockdown and the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp was closed at Imperial Avenue for several hours as authorities searched for the shooter.

The shooter was still on the loose Saturday night as homicide detectives investigated the cause of the shooting.

A description of the person responsible was not immediately available.
