SAN DIEGO — A 29-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of a toddler in Alpine earlier this week.

Brett Brown of Alpine was taken into custody in San Diego and has been booked into jail on suspicion of murder and child abuse in connection with the death of 19-month-old Lucas Orlando, according to sheriff’s Lt. Kenneth Nelson. Brown was in a relationship with the boy’s mother, according to a homicide detective.

Brown’s arrest came three days after deputies and medics were sent to a home on Arnold Way to investigate a report of a child suffering from severe trauma sustained in a fall, Nelson said. Lucas was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital to be treated, but died from his injuries Wednesday.

“Based on the nature of the injuries and evidence gathered in the case, detectives from the Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, Child Abuse Unit and the Alpine Command investigated the case as a possible homicide,” Nelson said.

However, the cause and manner of the boy’s death were pending the results of an autopsy, according to the lieutenant.

Anyone with additional information on the case was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (858) 974-2321 or (858) 565-5200. Anonymous tips can be made by contacting Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
