SAN DIEGO — Three young men were behind bars Wednesday for allegedly beating a man nearly to death during a robbery in the Marina district.
Arrested on suspicion of carrying out the brutal attack behind the San Diego Convention Center early Tuesday were Daniel Samuel Martinez and David Emilio Ruiz, both 21, and Jorge Navarro Tello, 23, according to police.
The trio allegedly attacked the 31-year-old victim in the area of Park Boulevard and West Harbor Drive shortly before 3:30 a.m., Lt. Mike Hastings said.
Patrol officers responding to the fracas found the assailants gone and the gravely injured man lying near a sidewalk. Medics took him to a hospital, where he was admitted in “extremely critical” condition with blunt-force trauma to his upper body, the lieutenant said.
Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the assault due to the victim’s poor prognosis. His name was withheld pending family notification.
Martinez and Tello were arrested in the 1200 block of K Street, near Petco Park, about 13 hours after the crime. Ruiz was taken into custody about 9:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of C Street.
Hastings said the motive for the assault was unknown and did not disclose what led police to identify the three men as the alleged assailants.
The suspects were booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder. They were being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
