SAN DIEGO – Two women standing outside their car on Interstate 8 near Midway District were hit by a driver Thursday evening.

Two women pulled into the center median of eastbound Interstate 8 near Sports Arena Boulevard on-ramp after noticing something was wrong with their car, California Highway Patrol said. Both got out of the car and discovered part of the wheel well had fallen off.

The driver of a Saturn Ion was approaching in the freeway lane and tried to swerve to miss the piece of debris that fell off the car, CHP said. The driver ended up hitting the disabled car and both women.

Both women suffered major injuries, one was taken to UCSD Medical Center and the other to Scripps Mercy Hospital.

Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be involved in the crash, CHP said.
