SAN DIEGO — A man and a woman were shot while driving on a freeway in East County Monday night.
The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 8, according to California Highway Patrol. The driver was able to call police and make it to the 76 gas station on El Cajon Boulevard near Washington Avenue in El Cajon.
Paramedics and officers met the two victims at the station, where they were put in an ambulance and taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Police did not release a detailed description of the injuries, but both people were expected to recover.

CHP Officer Travis Garrow told reporters that once the victims were treated, they would be interviewed, because “they are probably the best witnesses we have right now.” It wasn’t immediately clear if the two had been targeted or if the shooting was a random attack.
Investigators planned to close lanes on the interstate at some point overnight to search for evidence that could pinpoint the exact location of the shooting. The vehicle involved was towed and searched for embedded bullets or other evidence leading to the shooter.
“If anyone saw anything occur up there on the 8 and has more information they can provide for us, please contact us immediately,” Garrow added. You can call CHP’s El Cajon office at 619-401-2000.
