SAN DIEGO – A San Diego police officer and a man were seriously injured when a vehicle hit them in the Midway District Thursday morning, authorities said.
An officer was checking on a report of vandalism in the 3100 block of Midway Drive around 5 a.m. and came across a man in his 30s. The man ran when he saw the officer, and the officer chased him for a few blocks, according to SDPD Sgt. V. Houseman. The officer caught up to the man in the 3500 block of Rosecrans Street.
“While taking the suspect into custody in the street, both were struck by an oncoming vehicle,” Houseman said. “The driver remained at the scene.”
One person was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center and the other went to Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said.
The officer was in serious, but stable condition, Houseman said. The man suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police shut down southbound Rosecrans Street between Midway Drive and Sports Arena Boulevard for the crash investigation.
The identities of the people involved in the collision were not released.
