SPRING VALLEY, Calif. -- A construction worker died Wednesday in an accident at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley, authorities said.

The 30-year-old man fell from a beam that was attached to a 30-foot platform at about 2 p.m., according to Sgt. Matt Cook with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Officials performed CPR at the scene before the man was transported to Grossmont Hospital.

The victim was pronounced dead once he arrived at the hospital, Cook said. His name has been withheld pending family notification. One other person was hurt in the accident and taken to the hospital, the school district said, though it wasn't immediately clear how they were injured or how seriously.

The construction site is a new event center for the high school. A "topping out" ceremony was held Wednesday morning to mark the structure's highest element being hoisted into place.

The accident was under investigation by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
