Driver arrested after crash critically injures 2


Drunken driving is suspected in a crash that critically injured two people near Balboa Park.

SAN DIEGO – Two people were critically injured in a crash near Balboa Park, the California Highway Patrol said.

Firefighters arrived to find two mangled vehicles in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the offramp to state Route 163 around 2 a.m. A Lexus sedan with three people inside  overturned in a single-vehicle crash, trapping one person inside.

Shortly afterwards, a pickup truck slammed into the overturned Lexus. The driver of the truck was able to get out of the vehicle on his own.

It took rescuers around 35 minutes to free the person trapped in the Lexus. Two people were taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the Lexus sedan was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

All lanes were reopened around 5:20 a.m.
