OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A fire apparently sparked by a cooking accident damaged an apartment near Mission San Luis Rey Friday and sent two adults and two children to hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The blaze at Country Villas Apartments in the 200 block of Douglas Drive in Oceanside erupted about 9 a.m. It took engine crews roughly 20 minutes to get the flames under control, Battalion Chief Greg deAvila said.

Medics took three residents of the damaged residence — a woman and her two young children — to hospitals, along with a witness who entered the burning structure to look for anyone who might be trapped inside. All four were evaluated for possible smoke-related respiratory trauma.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday afternoon, though it appeared to have been related to a kitchen mishap of some kind, deAvila said.
