SAN DIEGO - One person was killed in a shooting in the Valencia Park neighborhood Sunday.

It happened just before 4 p.m. in the 5500 block of Bonita Drive, according to San Diego Police Department lieutenant Mike Holden said.

Officers said when they got to the scene they found a 27-year-old man in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound to his upper body, and they immediately began performing CPR. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives told FOX 5 at this time they have not arrested anyone, and they are not actively looking for a suspect.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, said when he stepped outside he saw a man on the ground holding another man.

"I tried calling 911, and all I could hear was someone yelling in the background ‘It was an accident. It was an accident,'" the witness said. “And the man on the ground that was holding him seemed like he was yelling at another man and said ‘Why did you do this? Why did you do that?’”

FOX 5 asked police if this may have been an accidental shooting.

“We’re going to look at all the possibilities that’s why we’re out here talking to witnesses, processing the scene. Right now we don’t know exactly what happened so anything’s possible,” Holden said.

Several neighbors said for a few weeks they have been hearing what sounds like gunshots in the evening hours.

The name of the victim has not been released.
