BONSALL, Calif. — A motorist was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he crashed into a North County Transit District bus near Bonsall, seriously injuring himself and causing minor injuries to three people on the bus, authorities said Tuesday.

The crash happened shortly before 9:10 p.m. Monday on South Mission Road north of state Route 76, California Highway Patrol Mark Latulippe said.

A 39-year-old man was driving a Ford Focus southbound on South Mission Road when he let the car veer into the opposite lane and spin, then his vehicle was struck on the side by the northbound bus, Latulippe said.

Paramedics took the Ford driver to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for treatment of serious injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.

Three of the eight people on the bus — including the bus driver — were evaluated at the scene for complaints of pain, Latulippe said.

The Ford driver, whose name was not available, was expected to be booked into jail on suspicion of DUI after being medically cleared, he said.
