SAN DIEGO – A fatal crash in City Heights Thursday afternoon involved a San Diego Gas & Electric truck and a taxi, authorities said.

The taxi driver was killed when his cab collided with a utility truck at the Home and Fairmount avenues intersection just before 3 p.m., authorities reported.

A witness told Fox5 the taxi was driving fast and crashed into the back of the truck.

Officers arrived to find the cab driver pinned in his crumpled car, SDPD public-affairs Officer Humberto Hernandez said. The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The wreck left the intersection closed to through traffic into the late afternoon, Hernandez said.

SDG&E spokesperson issued a statement regarding the crash:

“The SDG&E truck was struck from behind by the cab. While we are thankful that our crewmembers were not injured, we are saddened to learn that the cab driver has passed away. Our condolences go out to those involved in this tragic incident and to their families.”

Friends of the taxi driver said he had a wife and two children.
