SAN DIEGO – A person was killed early Sunday morning in a fiery crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 8 near San Diego State University, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A driver in a BMW was traveling eastbound on the freeway approaching College Avenue at 4:45 a.m. when the car suddenly hit the median, CHP said. The car, which caught fire after the first collision, was then hit by an F-150 truck.

The BMW driver was ejected and then possibly hit by a third vehicle, a Silverado pickup, CHP said.

The ejected driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Silverado was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the initial crash.

Eastbound traffic was blocked at the Waring Road exit from 5:05 a.m. until approximately 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
