VISTA, Calif. -- A 24-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol was in custody Saturday after authorities said he crashed into two joggers in Vista, killing one of them and seriously injuring the other.

The driver lost control of his vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk, striking two pedestrians and then crashing into a light pole, said Sgt. H. Gonzalez of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

It occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of South Melrose Drive.

One of the victims, a 40-year-old man, died at the scene and a 34-year- old woman was taken to Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries, Gonzalez said.

After the driver was freed from his vehicle, he also was transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries, Gonzalez added.
