Penguin plungers ring in the new year

DEL MAR, Calif. – About a hundred brave souls took part in an annual tradition of swimming in the chilly Pacific Ocean on New Year’s Day Thursday.

The Penguin Plunge had 500 spectators witnessing the bold participants enter into the ocean near the Del Mar Lifeguard Tower at 11 a.m.

The water temperature at the time of the Penguin Plunge event was in the low 60s.

The “plunge” events are held around the world during on New Year’s Day and participants enter a body of water despite the low temperature.
