    CARLSBAD, Calif. — Alex Rejto, a senior baseball captain and shortstop at Canyon Crest Academy, founded Champions Baseball, a league for special needs boys and girls in North County. Each player has their own volunteer buddy with them at all times to teach, run the bases and cheer them on.     SAN DIEGO — The Padres made team history Monday night losing 15-0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park on Opening Day.   • Motorist killed when car veers off I-5 in Otay Mesa

    SAN DIEGO — A man was killed after veering off Interstate 5 Saturday evening, according to California Highway Patrol. Authorities say the incident occurred at 9:10 p.m. on southbound I-5 near State Route 905. The vehicle veered off the right side of the road into some brush. A pole fell down onto the roof of the vehicle and rolled off. CHP is investigating what caused the accident. It is unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

    SAN DIEGO — Police are searching for an armed man who robbed an AT&T store in Kearny Mesa Saturday evening. Authorities say the suspect entered the store on the 8000 block of Clairemont Mesa Blvd. around 7:37 p.m. He approached an employee and lifted his shirt, showing a black handgun.     Pedestrian killed on freeway ramp

    SAN DIEGO — Authorities are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian Friday evening on the southbound Interstate 5 transition ramp to eastbound State Route 94. Authorities said the collision occurred at 6:50 p.m. CHP issued a SIG Alert for the transition shortly thereafter. The ramp was shut down until about 9:30 p.m. CHP is currently investigating the cause of the accident.

    Motorcyclist killed in SR-163 crash

    SAN DIEGO — CHP has issued a SigAlert for a crash that killed a motorcyclist on southbound State Route 163 Saturday night just north of University Ave. Officials say the accident occurred at 9:20 involving a motorcycle and another vehicle. They are investigating the cause of the collision. No other injuries were reported. Four lanes remain closed on SR-163. This is a developing story.
