SAN DIEGO -- Firefighters were battling flames after a truck crashed into a Spring Valley home and struck a gas line Friday evening.

Crews responded to the crash along the 9700 block of Huron Street around 5 p.m., where they discovered a gas line on the side of the house had been hit by the vehicle.

According to Battalion Chief Andy Lawler with San Miguel Fire and Rescue, nearby residents rushed to help the driver after the crash and found him unconscious.

A fire extinguisher was used to break one of the vehicle's windows and pull the driver out, Lawler said. The driver was then taken to a trauma center for treatment of serious injuries.

Two adults and two pets were in the home at the time of the crash but were not injured, Lawler said.

Firefighters were still battling the blaze at 7 p.m. Crews were keeping water on the flames to prevent the fire from spreading into the house as others worked to secure the broken gas line.

No evacuations were ordered for nearby homes, officials said.

Officials were investigating to determine whether DUI was a factor in the crash.
