NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- A woman was hit and killed by a car Monday night in National City.

The collision happened around 9:15 p.m. on Valley Road near Calle Abajo, authorities said. The woman, later identified as 52-year-old Chula Vista resident Rebecca Sparks, had been visiting family in National City and walking to her parked car when she was hit by the passing vehicle, police said.

A bystander immediately called 911 and first responders tried to resuscitate the woman but were unable to save her life. Sparks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver pulled over after the collision and cooperated with police.

Officials closed Calle Abajo between Reo Drive and Sweetwater Road while authorities conduct an investigation.
