$50K in eyeglasses stolen from South Bay store

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Four people were caught on surveillance video breaking into a Chula Vista optometry business and stealing more than $50,000 in merchandise.

A surveillance camera captured footage of the break-in at Pack and Bianes Vision Care Optometry in the 300 block of East H Street, which happened around 4:10 a.m. on July 16, according to Chula Vista police.

Four burglars, with their faces covered by various articles of clothing, forced entry into the business and stole thousands of dollars worth of high end eyeglasses before fleeing in an SUV, police said.

Chula Vista police say the four men were in and out in under three minutes.

“The way they were in and out and the way they were systematically going through the drawers and taking product off the shelves it looks like they had planned this for quite some time. They also had a timeline it appeared, so they knew by the time they broke the door an alarm would be going off. They had bags out and they were grabbing as much product as they could before they left,” Chula Vista Police Lt. Dan Peak said.

No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available, but the video did reveal a few clues.

“The best description we can provide from the video surveillance system, is a suspect wearing a white hooded sweatshirt. He appears to be wearing glasses and a really thin mustache. One of the other suspects was wearing very distinctive sneakers that had a reflective pattern to them,” Peak said.

“It definitely is like someone breaking into your home," said Dr. John Pack, owner of Pack & Bianes Vision Care.

Pack told FOX 5 the thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, which is now forcing him to take extra precautions to keep his business secure. “It takes time to restock those items, so patients in the interim don’t have inventory to choose from. Psychologically it was a hit for our employees as well,” Pack said.

“Any tip we’re asking for would be helpful for the investigators. Hopefully we’ll be able to make some arrests and get those glasses back to the business," Peak said.

Anyone with information about the break-in was urged to call the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Editor's note: This story initially reported that the merchandise stolen was valued at more than $100,000. The story has been updated to reflect a change in the estimated value of the stolen merchandise.
