SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento police officer was shot Wednesday in North Sacramento, KTXL reports.
Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler reports around noon, there was a disturbance between a male and a female in the 200 block of Redwood Avenue near Edgewater Road in North Sacramento.
Just after 3:30 p.m., officers met with the woman at a separate location and a little more than two hours later they accompanied her to the North Sacramento residence so she could retrieve some belongings.
While officers were with her at the Redwood Avenue home, shots were fired at them and an officer was hit by the gunfire around 6:10 p.m.
It is unknown how many other officers were in the area at the time, but Chandler says they took cover until an armored vehicle arrived in the neighborhood.
The lieutenant reports the female officer was “pinned” in a yard of another home as other officers attempted to get to her.
Just before 7 p.m., Chandler reports the officer was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in serious condition. Several officers and patrol cars are at the medical center.
As of around 8:30 p.m., the suspect, who is armed with a rifle, was still firing from another home on Redwood Avenue. Negotiators at the scene have not been able to contact the suspect.
The public has been told to avoid the area.
