1 dead, 2 wounded in shooting at Chula Vista Costco

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A man confronted his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend Monday in the parking lot of a Costco in Chula Vista, shot them both and then killed himself with the same gun, police said.

The couple was putting groceries into their car outside the warehouse store at 1130 Broadway shortly before 1 p.m., and the woman's baby was in a stroller next to them when her ex-boyfriend came up to them and began arguing, according to Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak. During the fight, the ex-boyfriend pulled out a handgun and shot woman and her companion several times at close range. He then shot himself, Peak said. The baby was not harmed.

Both men and the woman were taken by ambulance to UCSD Medical center. The gunman was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound just before 2 p.m., Peak said. The other man and woman underwent surgery for their wounds and were in serious condition .

The names of the gunman and his victims have not been released.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities are not currently looking for other suspects. "We're very confident there is one suspect, one shooter, and that person has been pronounced deceased," Peak said.

The Costco parking lot will remain a crime scene for several hours, Peak said, so people should avoid the area.  However, Costco officials said the store would remain open for shoppers during the investigation.

The shooting comes just three days after a fatal shooting at a Costco in Corona, California, about 100 miles north of San Diego. In that incident, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a 32-year-old man and wounded his parents. The circumstances of that incident are under investigation.
