LIVE OAK SPRINGS, Calif. — A man behind the wheel of a pickup truck was killed Sunday morning in a fiery crash at a freeway offramp to Highway 8 in Live Oak Springs, and officials are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver.
The crash at the Crestwood Road offramp to the westbound highway occurred around 4 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP said the victim was driving a Toyota Tundra “at a suspected high rate of speed” toward the offramp when he drifted into the center median “for unknown and undetermined reasons.”
After crashing into a metal guardrail lining the median, the Tundra went off the freeway, ejecting the driver and engulfing the truck in flames.
No highway lanes were blocked, the CHP said, because the vehicle landed on Crestwood Road, under the westbound lanes of the highway.
Due to the extensive fire, the man remains unidentified, but the CHP said “it appears the driver is a black male adult with a short and thin stature, possible affiliated with the military.”
Anyone with information regarding the crash and/or the identity of the driver was asked to call the El Cajon CHP office at 619-401-2000.
