LAKESIDE, Calif. -- A man's body was found in the San Vicente Reservoir in Lakeside Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Rescue teams first got a call to prepare for a potential search around 10 a.m., Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky with San Diego Fire-Rescue said. Eventually they were called in to search for a missing person because a boater had noticed a capsized kayak and an odor coming from the area.
By around noon, lifeguards had recovered a man's body near the overturned vessel, Stropky said. They also found fishing poles nearby, leading investigators to believe the person who died had been a fisherman.
Strong winds had created rough conditions on the reservoir and likely pushed the kayak toward shore, so it was difficult to know for certain where the small boat had capsized, Stropky explained. Officials said winds were estimated at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour Saturday morning.
"The conditions are pretty rough," he said. "The wind kicks up and this reservoir can get pretty challenging for small boats like that."
Information regarding the man's identity was not immediately released. Officials said there was no reason to believe anyone else had been in the kayak.
Detectives from the San Diego Police Department were investigating.
