More than 300 evacuated after East Village homeless shelter floods

SAN DIEGO -- A homeless shelter in the East Village was evacuated Thursday night due to major flooding in the area.

Between 250 and 300 people from the Alpha Project's tented shelter near Newton Avenue and 16th Street boarded seven MTS buses and were driven to SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley, according to San Diego Fire-Department Battalion Chief Robert Logan.

The American Red Cross is providing supplies to evacuees.

"Probably everything is lost. Like they said, we're under water. My clothes that I have are gone so the only thing I have right now is what I have on right now," said Will Duenz, who was staying at the shelter.
