Driver dies after crashing into tree

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on a San Marcos road, authorities said.

The car veered off North Twin Oaks Valley Road near East La Cienega Road and hit a tree around 5:30 a.m., according to a San Diego County Sheriff's Department official. The driver was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

“We heard, just a ‘bang’ and we didn’t know what it was. My husband got up and looked outside and didn’t see anything. About 20 minutes later he heard ambulances and saw lights -- knew something was up," said a woman who lives nearby.

Deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station shut down all northbound and southbound lanes of North Twin Oaks Valley Road between Del Roy Drive and East La Cienega Road for the crash investigation and clean-up, Menzies said.

Officials said the man was wearing a seatbelt and that there was no indication drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

“We need to be aware you cannot drive the same in the rain as you do on a dry day," said Sgt. Nick Maryn with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
