SAN DIEGO — A pilot broke his leg Wednesday during a hard landing at the Ocotillo Wells Airport in Borrego Springs.

It was not immediately clear why the pilot was forced to make a hard landing at about 8:40 a.m. at the airport, located off state Route 78 about 30 miles east of Julian.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor told FOX 5 the aircraft had been an “ultralight” — a lightweight,  airplane-style aircraft that glides at low speeds — and didn’t require a pilot’s license or certification by the FAA.

The pilot was the only person on board. He broke his leg during the rough landing and was taken to the hospital by helicopter, county officials confirmed.
