Man dies following fistfight

SAN DIEGO — A 50-year-old man who got into a fistfight in a Valencia Park-area neighborhood Tuesday became stricken and died of unknown causes a short time later.

The altercation in the 5600 block of Imperial Avenue took place about 1 p.m., according to San Diego police.

After the fight ended, one of the two combatants told a bystander he was having chest pains, Lt. Anthony Dupree said.

“The victim did not have any obvious signs of trauma to his body,” Dupree said.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit was called to the scene,” Dupree said in the late afternoon. “(Detectives) are currently investigating this incident as a suspicious death.”

The dead man’s name was withheld pending family notification
