OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A gas leak prompted authorities to evacuate an Oceanside neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

The leak, in a community northeast of the Interstate 5 and state Route 78 interchange, was first reported at 9:48 a.m., Oceanside Police Lt. Kedrick Sadler said.

Construction crews working in the 1500 block of Kelly Street might have nicked a pipe, causing natural gas to spew into the air, Sadler said.

Multiple nearby homes were evacuated, though Sadler couldn’t say precisely how many.

By 11 a.m., officers and firefighters had cleared the scene and residents were allowed back into their homes, officials confirmed.
