SANTEE, Calif. -- A busy intersection in Santee remained closed Wednesday morning after a late-night water main break.
The break occurred at Mission Gorge Road near Fanita Drive around 11 p.m. Tuesday. All lanes on the road were closed until 2 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol, at which time one lane was opened in each direction on Mission Gorge between state Route 125 and Carlton Hills Boulevard.
That single lane remained the only option for commuters passing through the intersection Wednesday morning.
Jessica Webster lives in the area and says she’s already fed up with the mess.
“Yeah, I say call in sick to work. That’s mine, rather than deal with the traffic in the morning yeah no,” said Santee Resident, Jessica Webster.
She like many other drivers are getting stuck in traffic and are now having to find alternate ways to avoid the intersection.
“Busy road, no matter what yes, so it’s kind of screwing everybody,” said Webster.
The repairs are also creating problems for nearby businesses.
“Two times already in 6 months,” said Cotija's Taco Shop owner, Rafael Barragan.
The owner of the taco shop says the same main broke in October but this time he says it looks worse and he’s seeing less business already.
"The traffic is going to go start going from the 52 instead of crossing the street so that’s going to affect the business but there’s nothing we can do,” said Barragan.
Padre Dam Water officials confirmed the repairs could take several more days. Bad news for drivers in the area, and businesses that rely on the road.
"It’s bad for everybody I hope they fix it soon,” said Barragan.
Officials told FOX 5 that the same 16-inch water main that ruptured Tuesday also burst last October. They are now investigating the cause.
