Deputies arrest Vista murder suspect

VISTA, Calif. — Deputies chased down and arrested a murder suspect after a man was found dead in his Vista apartment early Sunday morning.

Just before 4 a.m., residents called 911 to report seeing a “man down” inside an apartment in the 100 block of Hill Drive, according to San Diego Sheriff’s Lt. Rich Williams.

Deputies found the man lying unresponsive on the floor of the apartment with “visible injuries to his upper body,” but no further details about the injuries were made released. Firefighters tried unsuccessfully to revive the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Williams said.

Around the same time as deputies responded to the man inside the apartment, the sheriff’s department was also called to the scene of a crash on nearby Grapevine Road. A driver had crashed into two parked cars and a fence — and when deputies approached the man behind the wheel, he ran away from them. Deputies caught up to the driver, identified as 26-year-old Sergio Orozco of Vista, and arrested him.

The sheriff’s department confirmed that Orozco will face murder charges, but did not clarify specifically how he was potentially connected to the death of the man found in the apartment.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s cause of death, Williams said. The man has not yet been identified.

Deputies asked anyone with information on the incident to call sheriff’s homicide investigators at (858) 974-2321 / after hours at (858) 565- 5200. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can also call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
