SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State Aztecs men's basketball team advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015 with a 82-75 victory over New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday.
The Aztecs victory came on the strength of tournament MVP Trey Kell's career-high 28 points. The senior scored in double figures in all three games of the tournament.
It was SDSU's ninth victory in a row, and a win that capped a remarkable turnaround for the Aztecs after losing six of eight games just one month ago.
This will be Brian Dutcher's first trip to the Big Dance as a head coach, after taking over for Steve Fisher following the longtime coach's retirement in April.
On Sunday, the Aztecs learned that they'll enter the tournament as the 11th seed in the West Region. They will face sixth-seeded Houston on Thursday in Wichita, Kansas.
