Unusually dry weather prompts Christmas tree safety warning

SAN DIEGO — Prolonged dry weather and low humidity are creating a unique hazard this holiday season for live cut indoor Christmas trees.

With the unusually dry weather this holiday season, Christmas trees are drying out quickly and require special attention in order not to become a fire hazard.


Live cut indoor Christmas tree safety tips:

*Check branches for dryness

*Daily: check and maintain water in the Christmas tree holder

*Turn Christmas tree lights off when you go to bed or leave the house

*Check Christmas tree lights for frayed wiring and bad connections

Other holiday safety tips:

*Keep candles away from packages and other combustible items

*Clear a 18″ minimum clearance around space heaters, and keep them from anything combustible including mattresses, and clothing

*Check batteries in your smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detectors
