SAN DIEGO -- A pickup truck traveling the wrong way on state Route 52 in Clairemont collided with an oncoming car early Tuesday, killing both drivers.

The gray 2006 Ford Ranger was heading east on the westbound side of the freeway shortly after 12:30 a.m. when it crashed head-on into a 2013 Mercedes- Benz CLS 550 driven by 52-year-old Riyadh Kafaji of La Jolla, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.

Kafaji and the other motorist died at the scene of the crash. The man behind the wheel of the truck, which became engulfed in flames following the collision, remained unidentified late Tuesday afternoon.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, the CHP reported.

The accident left both westbound lanes of the freeway in the area blocked for about 90 minutes.
