SAN DIEGO -- A 30-year-old man escaped after being shot eight times while arguing with a man in the Egger Highlands neighborhood, a police officer said Sunday.

A group of people were standing outside a home in the 1700 block of Ionian Street around 10 p.m. Saturday when an argument started, a gun was pulled out and the 30-year-old man was shot eight times, most of them to his lower abdomen, San Diego police said.

“I thought it was fireworks going off at first and then I realized from the sounds of it that it was gunfire 15 to 20 feet from my bedroom,” said Howard Gire, a neighbor.

Gire said it was a frightening experience for his family.

“It was a scary thing to go through. It’s very unsettling to say the least. I spent time in the reserves and fired weapons before, but it’s different when somebody else is shooting and you don’t know where it’s coming from,” said Gire.

Police said the gunman left the neighborhood in a white truck.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

“I feel bad for the guy that got shot. They expect him to make a recovery, but I hope they find the people that did it,” said Gire.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact San Diego Police Department.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
