SAN DIEGO - A motorist believed to have struck two men attempting to cross a street in the Midway area before fleeing was arrested early Monday after a brief chase that ended in a crash, police said.

One of the pedestrians hit near the intersection of Sports Arena Boulevard and Camino Del Rio West around 10:20 p.m. Sunday was dragged about 800 feet and ended up on Rosecrans Street. The driver sped off afterward.

One victim, a 24-year-old man, was in critical condition after suffering a fractured pelvis and major injuries to his face and arms. His 25-year-old companion sustained only minor injuries and was in stable condition, police said in a statement.

Around 1 a.m., officers attempted to pull over a car seen driving without its headlights on near the intersection of Colusa and Lauretta streets in the Morena area, but the driver didn't comply. Officers later determined the car was the one involved in the earlier hit-and-run crash.

The car struck a parked car and a power pole about a minute later and the 26-year-old driver, Yosvaldo Sixco, was taken into custody, police said.
