POWAY, Calif. – Two deputies suffered minor injuries while arresting a driver who tried to avoid a weekend DUI checkpoint in Poway.

Deputies set up the checkpoint at 9 p.m. Saturday on Twin Peaks Road in Poway. One of the 1,223 drivers who passed through the checkpoint was Bren Leroux. Deputies determined that he was driving under the influence, but before they could arrest him, he jumped out of his car and took off running. Deputies chased him. When they caught up with Leroux, he put up a struggle and two officers suffered scrapes and abrasions while subduing him, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Both were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Leroux was booked into jail for DUI and resisting arrest.

In all, 653 vehicles were stopped at the checkpoint. Leroux was the only driver cited for DUI, but two were cited for driving without a licence, one for driving with a suspended license and another for driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
