Woman shot by baby’s father with infant in car

SAN DIEGO — An 18-year-old woman who was shot in the chest by the father of her child as she was driving along a busy street in North Park Saturday afternoon pulled over and called police, and the suspect was arrested a little more than an hour later.

Their baby and one other man were in the back seat of the car when an argument broke out between the mother and the 19-year-old father, who was in the front passenger seat.

Officers and paramedics responded to the 4200 block of Iowa Street near El Cajon Boulevard at 1:30 p.m., according to Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.

The woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance with a gunshot wound to her upper left chest, while officers closed off the block on Iowa Street and parts of El Cajon Boulevard between 30th Street and Iowa Street, police said. Her injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.

The woman told police she was shot while driving along El Cajon Boulevard. A 19-year-old suspect was taken into custody in the 3100 block of Howard Avenue at about 2:45 p.m., just a few blocks away from where the car pulled over, Martinez said.
