SAN DIEGO -- A 55-year-old woman was hit and killed by a truck Thursday evening when crossing a busy street in Rancho Penasquitos.

The incident happened at 7:30 p.m. near Carmel Mountain Road and Gerana Street.

The woman, who was walking with a man, was not in a crosswalk. No crosswalk was seen for at least 200 yards in either direction of the incident. The man safely crossed the street.

Witnesses say the woman was carrying laundry home when she was hit.

The 72-year-old driver of the truck remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation. It was not yet determined whether alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash.

Residents told FOX 5 they've tried to take action to make the street safer to cross.

"I've lived here 19 years," Scott Johnson said. "A few years back, we had a petition -- a whole bunch of people in the complex signed it -- to try to make it somewhat safer to cross the street at the intersection here. That petition went absolutely nowhere."
