SAN DIEGO — Three men were arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime in connection with the attack on a Somali man in SanDiego’s Redwood Village neighborhood over the weekend, police said.

Officers were called to Zappy Pizza in the 5900 block of University Avenue Sunday shortly after 3:30 p.m., according to Officer Dino Delimitros. The altercation began when the three white men made degrading comments about a group of Somalis based on their race and religion, he said.

The argument turned violent when a 20-year-old Somali man was struck in the face with a pair of brass knuckles. He was also struck in the back of the head with a chair, Delimitros said.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises to his face but refused medical treatment.  The three suspects were taken into custody nearby after being identified by witnesses, Delimitros said.
