SAN DIEGO — Authorities Monday publicly identified a 59-year-old homeless┬áman who was fatally struck by a car that veered off Interstate 8 and rolled into the embankment where he was sleeping.

Bernard Alan Scott was found dead in the shallow embankment at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, shortly after he was hit alongside the westbound freeway near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

An area resident who heard screaming called 911.

The 24-year-old San Diego man behind the wheel of the 2006 Cadillac CTS that struck Scott was hurt in the crash. He was pulled from his overturned car and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center to be treated for his injuries, according to the CHP.
