Mortally wounded man found lying near garage in rural East County

BOULEVARD, Calif. -- An investigation was underway Monday into the shooting death of a man in the rural Boulevard area.

A “person of interest'' was detained after the 55-year-old victim was found dying from multiple gunshots to his upper body near a home's garage on Old Highway 80 near Crestwood Road shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Sheriff's homicide Lt. Kenneth Nelson said the person of interest, whose name was not disclosed, was being questioned by detectives.

The victim died at the scene despite deputies' and paramedics' efforts to save his life, according to the lieutenant. His name was not immediately released.
