NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- Hundreds of students stuffed their backpacks with free notebooks, folders, pencils, erasers, glue sticks and crayons on Tuesday thanks to the National City Police Department.

The annual School Supplies Giveaway was held at 10 National City elementary schools.

The police department partnered with the Rotary Club, National City Police Officers Association, Costco and other community organizations to provide school supplies for students and help ease the financial burden for parents and teachers.

“All students need an opportunity to get the best education they can. It is our community’s hope that by providing these basic supplies to our students, they will have the opportunity to start the year full of confidence,” Police Chief Manuel Rodriguez said.
