New attacks on homeless sleeping alone by man on bicycle

SAN DIEGO – A fifth victim in the violent attacks against homeless men in San Diego was identified, police said.

San Diego Harbor police found a severely injured man on C Street in East Village around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, July 15. The man’s injuries were a result of an apparent blunt force attack, San Diego Police Department Lt. Manny Del Toro said.

Police learned the attack was conducted in a similar manner as four recent attacks on homeless men which resulted in three victims dead and one seriously injured, according to Toro.  The suspect description was known to police and the public and on duty officers searched for the suspect.

Officers arrested Jon David Guerrero for the recent attacks and he is facing murder, attempted murder and arson charges, Toro said.

The victim from the July 15 attack was identified as 55-year-old, Michael Joseph Papadelis. He also has ties to Florida and New York.  Although Papadelis’ injuries are serious, he is stable and expected to survive.
