SAN DIEGO -- A driver was detained Wednesday following a short pursuit that briefly jammed a North County freeway.

Shortly after noon in Escondido, a police officer saw a man erratically driving a Jeep Cherokee on westbound State Route 78 at Sycamore Avenue and Vista Drive.

The officer tried to stop the driver, but he wouldn't pull over and took off.

Moments later, the California Highway Patrol took over the chase as the driver turned onto southbound Interstate 5. Near the Cannon Road exit in Carlsbad, the SUV crashed and rolled over onto its side.

After a few minutes, the driver eventually climbed out of the vehicle and surrendered to officers. He was detained and taken to a local hospital.

There were no other injuries.

The name of the driver has not been released. Investigators were still trying to determine what charges the driver will face.
