OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A woman hit a pedestrian Monday morning and drove on for more than a mile with the dead man lodged in her windshield before stopping the car and fleeing on foot, police said.

The accident happened at 6:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of Mission Avenue, said Oceanside police information officer Ryan Keim. The force of the crash sent the man through the windshield of the car and into the front passenger seat, Keim said.

The woman continued driving for more than a mile to the 100 block of Magdalena Driver, where she abandoned the car and apparently walked to her house, police said. Her husband called police, police Lt. Karen Laser said.

Officers interviewed 29-year-old Esteysi Sanchez, identified her as the driver of the car and arrested her on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, and driving under the influence of alcohol. She was booked into  the Vista jail.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information was asked to call the Oceanside Police Department at 760-435-4911.
